1919 | Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost
Description
1919 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Barker Open Drive.
Registration number: LW7040
Chassis number: 9PP
After War started in August 1914, and it became apparent it wasn’t going to over by Christmas, all the part built chassis were pushed to one side so that aero engines could take total priority. The intended 1915 numbers were never issued. When cars restarted in 1919, six weeks after the Armistice, the part built vehicles were pulled back from storage and allocated a PP (standing for POSTPONED) number. They comprise several prewar components but with postwar improvements like electric starting. Many Gurus ( John Fasal ), consider the PP Series the best of ALL Ghosts. This is the ninth car built in very early 1919, so perhaps correctly described as 1915/1919. Very desirable.
Previously owned under decades long family ownership; we sold this car to an elderly gentleman a few years ago when it was listed at £220,000 & sold, who now must relinquish it as he is unable to drive it any longer. This 1919 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost wears coachwork by noted builders Barker & Co. The body is an open drive limousine with a particularly lovely ornate interior. A hard roof is fitted above the driver making it an open drive style car, but this is a removeable for open fronted motoring & additionally a fabric covering can be unrolled should one be caught in inclement weather.
The car is painted in the "dutch Pink" manner of vertical stripes in Green black & yellow givig it a very period look.
Robust in the extreme, this is a very powerful & long legged Silver ghost easily attaining 60 MPH despite the upright coachwork, Upon purchase by the current owner the car was sent for a full engine rebuild costing some £30k at Marque & defacto expert Carl Ford Engineering who has done a wonderful job of setting it up to its best advantage & giving it a full service. This is a very powerful car & is far faster then your average Ghost.
The opulent interior is of Bedford cord extending also to the twin fold out occasional seats. A smokers hatch is fitted to the roof. A useful table folds out from between the occasional seats. The doors & interior are trimmed in brocade. A speaking tube & rear curtains are also fitted.
To the front is black leather in fine order. There are also fabric side curtains fitted which may be unfurled to afford the driver protection.
All in all this is a completely up & together Ghost with a very vintage feel to it harking back to the pre war years. Viewings are strongly encouraged.
