Description

This must be the most impressive MG Midget we’ve owned in over 30 years in the classic car industry. We’ve had show standard, fully rebuilt examples but we have never had one with such an incredible level of history and importantly one that drives quite like this. This is truly sensational on the road and whilst it does retain a high level of originality, it boasts an impressive specification to include an Oselli Class A 1330 race engine, stainless steel manifold, oil cooler, high demand fuel pump, electric fan, electronic ignition, uprated suspension and 5 speed gearbox resulting in the most unbelievable MG Midget driving experience.

EGO 420J comes with a magnificent history file with maintenance log dating back to 1972. Pages of typed notes accompany a huge invoice file, MOT certificates dating back to when the car was five years old, tax discs and a photo record of a light renovation in 1995 - the car has never required total restoration. Interestingly, the MG was purchased by a Reverend and his wife in 1975, and the MG didn't change hands again for over 48 years when it was purchased by one of our South Yorkshire regular clients who has been buying classic cars from us since the early 1990's.

In almost 50 years of ownership the long-term owner covered 50,000 miles and the highly detailed service history shows fastidious ownership that has kept this car on the road its entire life. From 1975 to 1978 the MG was in daily use, but from 1978 it became the summer days only car and has always been garaged, The car has never been fully restored, but serviced, touched up and repaired as needed. The photographic record of the 1995 light renovation and new Oselli engine clearly demonstrate by photograph the care that has gone into keeping the car in strong, usable condition, and since the new highly upgraded engine the MG has covered 8000 miles. The five speed gearbox was fitted in 2006, the long term owner describing the car after the upgrade as feeling like a new car due to being much quieter and tauter. In more recent years the maintenance and improvements continued and EGO 420J arrives with us totally on the button and ready to use and enjoy.

Our MG is generally very well presented with older, yet bright Flame Red paintwork that has an incredibly original look. The bodywork is lovely and straight, and the very minor blemishes and imperfections indicate this is a true ‘user', and largely original car ideal for touring and regular use. The underside is totally solid, it's always been kept on top of, and the interior has a lovely aged feel to it. The MG Midget has a double duck hood, full tonneau and hood cover, spot lamps and comes with an enormous box file of history and original handbook.

EGO 420J is such a special car and really must be driven to be fully appreciated. The Oselli engine is quick, the car has so much power and performance for a Midget, its strong, fit, sounds terrific and pulls impressively through the gears. The five-speed gearbox transform the car for longer distance and higher speed use, and it handles brilliantly. The driving experience is sensational, the cost of taking a standard Midget to this level of driving quality would be astronomical. For such a wonderful driving car, adding the provenance and history, this is a fantastic buy and surely one of the best value examples available when considering all the factors.
