Description

Could a car epitomise the 1970s more? Finished in its original colours of Icon Gold contrasted by a green velour interior. We think it’s fabulous!

This 450SLC in itself was a real statement of success in the 70s. The SLC was Mercedes’ most expensive coupé, pairing the SL’s sporting looks with four seats and pillarless side glass. It replaced the much-loved W111 280SE 3.5 Coupé. Available as a 280, or a 350, but if money was no object, then it had to be the top 450 model with its 4.5-litre fuel-injected V8.

The specification includes an automatic transmission, air conditioning, Becker stereo, electric windows and sunroof and velour upholstery.

While we don’t know the story of who first owned this glamorous machine, we do know that over the last twenty years it has benefited from much care and attention, in the main by John Haynes, recording many thousands spent.

We supplied the car in 2018, when it was subject to a feature and front cover of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine (copy included) and again in 2024.

Only 81k miles from new, with books. Registered as Historic vehicle so MoT, ULEZ and tax exempt. Despite this, the car has a current MoT with no advisories.

As the photos show, this car presents very well. The underside and the bulkhead are in excellent order. The chromes and brightwork are all in nice condition too. The wheels wear colour-matched stainless hubcaps and Michelin XWX tyres.

Inside green velour is in exceptional condition. The interior plastics show no sun-bleaching or cracking, and the wood remains dark and glossy.

The V8 starts quickly and settles to an even burble. It’s a joy to drive with plenty of performance and great motorway cruising ability.

The SLC looks more stylish than ever today, with its pillarless roofline and quirky quarter-window blinds. It’s also a full four-seater. With such amazing colours, we think this is the coolest SLC we’ve seen.
