The Mercedes Benz Pagoda. Even before an actual model name is mentioned, almost every classic enthusiast knows which model it is: the stylish SL with upright headlights, the successor to the legendary W198 SL 'wing door' and its open variant. Unlike the predecessor, the Pagode is only available as an open roadster and it is clearly visible that the car was designed as a convertible. What a line!
The name Pagoda owes the W113 SL to the concave shape of the hardtop, which is reminiscent of the Chinese Pagoda roofs. You can also see the same shape in the headrests of the German convertible. The 280 SL is a great success for Mercedes-Benz and the model is still very popular. The beautifully contoured body, fantastic six-cylinder in-line engines and a finish that only a few exclusive competitors can match: an eternally loved classic in all aspects.

The 280 SL that we offer here is one in a fantastic and rare color scheme: green paint, a green interior and a green convertible top. We have not encountered the combination before and can only say that it makes for a beautiful whole.
The body of the SL is as tight as a string, which is partly due to the earlier restoration. The paint has a beautiful deep color and shine and the chrome shines just as hard or perhaps even harder. There is nothing to indicate on the exterior that is not in an exceptionally beautiful condition. If we have to point out something, it might be the wheel covers, the paint of which cannot be described as 'ten'.

The party inside continues. The leather upholstery of the seats, the green carpets, the dashboard that is largely green: the interior is also simply perfect. The subtly present wood, on the center tunnel and very beautiful on the top of the dashboard, is in perfect condition. It also colors phenomenally with the green upholstery, which makes the interior an unforgettable impression. Well, something that we could forget is the much too modern radio, which can of course be replaced by some classics or a retro model such as the Becker Mexico with all the conveniences of today. Fortunately, the eye is not drawn too much to the radio: the open Mercedes-Benz has an exceptionally beautiful clock shop that demands all the attention. The two large round meters with a vertically constructed cluster in between are of a quality that has had to lower the lower jaws not only now but also at the time.

The year of construction of this SL is 1971, which means that the most powerful version, the 280, was the only one that was still in the list. 170 hp strong and silky smooth performing its work, this engine, 2,778 cc in size, is a reliable all-rounder. Sporty driving is absolutely possible, sporty touring is preferred. The automatic gearbox is one that received rave reviews in its time and it still does today. The SL is a joy to drive, with the driveability, reliability and constant sense of being in a great car making the Mercedes-Benz a huge treat.
The same applies to the bottom of this W113 SL as to the rest of the car: the overall build quality of an SL is exceptionally good and that is now reflected in the condition and finish.
