The Mercedes-Benz W 111 was a model from the Heckflosse series by Mercedes-Benz, also known among enthusiasts as the "big (rear) fin," to distinguish it from the W 110 series (the "small rear fin"). The W 111 replaced the large Ponton models of the W 180 series in 1959 and provided the technical basis for Mercedes models until the late 1960s. The so-called standard body was typical, so that the sedan models from the entry-level W 110 to the six-cylinder W 111 and the air-sprung W 112 (Mercedes-Benz 300 SE) were similar in appearance. The W 111 was essentially replaced by the W 108 in 1965, with only the 230 S continuing to be produced as a sedan until 1968 alongside the W 110 and W 108/109 models. The W 111 Coupés and Cabriolets remained in production until 1971. Technically, the W 111 stood out for the single-joint swing axle with compensating spring already known from the 300 SL.

The W 111 and W 112 series included not only the four-door vehicles ("Heckflosse" sedans) but also the Coupés and Cabriolets with flatter bodies and rounded fins, which were only faintly visible. At the opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim on February 24, 1961, the new Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Coupé was presented. As a W 111, the Coupé and Cabriolet initially shared the same technology as the 220 SE sedan, known as the 220 SEb/C. Unlike its predecessor, the Coupé was based on the unshortened chassis of the sedan, making it a full-fledged four-seater. Coupé and sedan also shared numerous stylistic similarities, but not a single part of the four-door body could be used for the Coupé or Cabriolet. Four times as many parts were handcrafted for the Coupés and Cabriolets as for the sedan. These C-models were the last largely handcrafted Mercedes vehicles, which is why the price of the Coupés and Cabriolets was almost twice as high as that of the sedans. The 220 SEb/C was the first production Mercedes passenger car equipped with disc brakes on the front wheels. The original designation "SEb/C" is unique because it emphasized both the difference from the previous Ponton model (SE and SE(a)) and was dropped with the introduction of the almost identical 250 SE Coupé.
From 1965, the 250 SE Coupé models with 150 hp (110 kW) and the M 129 engine from the W 108 series were introduced. They, like the three-liter models, were equipped with 14-inch wheels and larger disc brakes from the W 108 series, now with disc brakes on the rear wheels as well. In 1967, Mercedes introduced a new 2.8-liter M 130 engine with 160 hp (118 kW). Accordingly, the new W 111/C became the 280 SE Coupé, with some minor interior changes, such as a previously veneered instrument panel now covered in leather. Another facelift, also externally recognizable, came to the W 111 in 1969 with the introduction of the 3.5-liter V8 engine (M 116) producing 200 hp (147 kW). From November 1969, the six-cylinder models also received a flatter hood and a lower grille. As a result, the models were informally distinguished as "high grille" and "low grille."
