Description

The McLaren Senna is the third car in the brand’s “Ultimate Series” and is named to honor one of the brand’s most famous racing drivers, Ayrton Senna. Racing for McLaren from 1988 until 1993, Senna won three Formula One Driver’s Championships and four back-to-back Constructors Championships for the brand before his tragic and untimely passing behind the wheel of a Williams at Imola in 1994. Standing as one of the most beloved race car drivers from what is considered a golden age for Formula 1, it was fitting that McLaren would want to pay tribute to his legacy, and they did that by producing one of the most track-focused vehicles to ever come out of its Woking factory. McLaren debuted the Senna online on December 10th, 2017, three months before its official unveiling at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. At this unveiling, the public was treated to not just the Senna road car but a surprise unveiling of the Senna GTR- a track-only concept car that took the already wild-looking road car and turned up the crazy even further, featuring enormous front and rear diffusers, a full fire suppression system and stripped out race interior. This design exercise was done to see what was capable with McLaren engineers not having to comply with any road or race regulations, meaning they could build the most capable car possible. And that they did- when the Senna GTR went on sale to the public in 2020, McLaren claimed it was the fastest and most capable car to come out of the brand this side of a Formula One race car.

This 2020 Senna GTR is a stunning example, that has seen just 89 km of use since its completion. Built as a tribute to Ayrton Senna’s most famous racing car - the McLaren MP4/4 of 1988- this car is finished in an outstanding combination of Anniversary White with MP4/4 Rocket Red Painted Livery. This evokes the famed Marlboro livery of the time and is accented around the car with a number of Senna logos and a graphic of his signature on the front clamshell and rear fenders, as well as Senna’s number -12- on the wing end plates and in front of the doors. Showing over £127,000 in MSO (McLaren Special Operations) options, it really goes without saying that this is a true one-of-one example and is finished in arguably the ultimate livery for this car. In addition to the MSO paint around the car, MSO gloss carbon fiber aero blades up front have been specified, as have satin gray brake calipers that blend in nicely behind the gray 9-spoke wheels.

The interior is a pure, no-nonsense race car. It has a pair of fixed Sabelt seats with the Senna logo embroidered on the headrests and bright red 6-point harnesses for both the driver and passenger. Swing open the butterfly door and step over the MSO satin carbon fiber sill panel and you will notice the bespoke MSO dedication placard with “MP4/4 By MSO” affixed to the sill. A Formula One-style steering wheel sits in front of you with a host of buttons that allow you to adjust the display screens and change some traction control and stability control parameters. A full color LCD screen with LED shift lights gives you up-to-the-moment information about the car, while a second screen off to the right side provides a more in-depth readout.

The Senna GTR is powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 as the road car but features a significant power bump over the road car’s 790 to a claimed 814 horsepower. When you factor in that the Senna GTR weighs a mere 2,619 lbs dry, that massive power makes for truly mind-bending performance. But this is a race car, and race cars aren’t just about straight-line speed, handling plays a significant factor in getting around a track quickly, and thanks to the exaggerated aerodynamics package on the GTR, it now produces a scarcely imaginable 2,204 lbs of downforce at speed, allowing you to take turns at speeds only before available to open wheel racing cars.

With only 75 Senna GTRs produced worldwide, they were collectible from the moment they debuted. This example, in its wonderful heritage color scheme, is bound to be one of the most instantly recognizable and shows that you are a true connoisseur of McLaren’s history. If you are fortunate enough to own a garage at one of the many race track country clubs around the world, the Senna GTR is the ultimate vehicle to take out for lapping- offering the speed and thrills of a sophisticated weapons-grade race car without the need for a team to help you run and look after it.
