Description

The Land Rover Series IIA, produced between 1961 and 1971, remains an icon of off-road capability and rugged design. The Series IIA is often considered the quintessential Land Rover due to its robust construction, timeless aesthetic and global utility. The Series IIA retained much of the Series II's design, with its flat aluminium body panels and distinctive 'barrel side' waistline. It was offered in both short-wheelbase (88 inch) and long-wheelbase (109 inch) variants, catering to different utility needs. Its front grille, typically a wire mesh or pressed steel design, added to its utilitarian charm. Under the bonnet, the Series IIA was powered by a range of engines, including the 2.25 litre petrol engine, a favourite for its reliability, and a 2.25 litre diesel, renowned for efficiency. These engines paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and a selectable four-wheel-drive system made the IIA a formidable off-road machine, capable of tackling the toughest terrains worldwide. It was whilst the Series IIA was in production that sales of utility Land Rovers reached their peak, in 1969-70, when sales of over 60,000 Land Rovers a year were recorded. The Land Rover dominated many world markets - in Australia, for example, the Land Rover held 90% of the 4×4 market in the 1960's. This figure was repeated in many countries such as Africa and the Middle East.

Manufactured on 8th January 1969 and despatched on 13th January, this right hand drive Land Rover was destined to Leyland Albion the designated dealer in Kenya. It remained in Kenya for over 50 years and was purchased by Major Jim Yates whilst he was stationed in Kenya for the British Army. The vehicle was restored in Kenya with invoices to confirm the work carried out. The car was then de-registered in Kenya and repatriated to the UK. Upon arriving in the UK, the car was then registered with the DVLA and a V5 registration document issued. Additional work has been carried out in the UK for which invoices are available. Presenting well in light green with a green interior, this Land Rover has not been over-restored and maintains its character. Today, the Series IIA is a beloved classic, cherished by collectors and enthusiasts. Its rugged simplicity and charm make it a symbol of adventure and utility. For many, the Series IIA embodies the golden age of Land Rover. Consigned by Stewart Banks
