The mighty, supercharged Jaguar XKR X100 was only a couple of years into its eight year run when the first “special” happened along... as if it wasn’t special enough, already.

One of the precipitating factors was Ford, then Jaguar’s owner, splashing out around $40M to buy Sir Jackie’s Stewart Grand Prix Formula 1 team. Despite the team being very much a Ford endeavour, the marketing folks were successful in persuading Dearborn to rename Stewart’s baby as “Jaguar Racing.” The Blue Oval’s deep coffers were raided sufficiently to entice the 1999 season’s runner up, Eddie Irvine, to join the team alongside Johnny Herbert.

To help mark this seminal moment Jaguar felt a special edition of their most powerful and sports orientated road car, the XKR, would be appropriate. To be produced in strictly limited numbers, 50 each in coupe and convertible configurations, the special would be called “Silverstone,” what else?

There are inevitably a few bits left for the next keeper to tidy up but that’s surely part of the fun. Where else are you going to find a true, one-of-fifty 370bhp Supercharged convertible British sports car? Answers on a postcard...
