Description

The Jaguar 420, introduced in 1966, is a luxury saloon that exemplifies the elegance and performance associated with the iconic British car manufacturer. As a successor to the Jaguar 3.8 and the 420G, the 420 was designed to offer both sophistication and power in a more compact and stylish package, compared to its larger siblings. Under the bonnet, the Jaguar 420 was equipped with a 4.2-litre inline-six engine, which was the same engine found in the Jaguar E-Type and the Jaguar XK series. This engine produced around 245 bhp and was paired with either a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission. With this set-up, the 420 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.4 seconds, which was impressive for its time, offering both refinement and sportiness. The car's design was striking, with the bodywork styled by the renowned Jaguar designer, Sir William Lyons. It shared many design elements with the Jaguar Mark X and the Jaguar S-Type, but its more compact size gave it a sleeker, more agile appearance. The 420 featured a chrome grille, round headlights, and a gently sloping roofline that contributed to its sophisticated look. Inside, the cabin was a testament to luxury, with leather upholstery, wood veneer trim, and a host of comfort features such as power windows and a fully equipped dashboard. The ride and handling of the Jaguar 420 were typical of the brand's reputation for engineering excellence. The car featured an independent rear suspension, providing a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rougher roads. Its steering and handling were precise, with a solid feel on the road, making it a joy to drive.

Originally registered on 4th March 1968 this 420 presents very well in light metallic grey with matching grey leather interior. The vendor has owned the car since June 2010 and has enjoyed the car immensely. A significant history file accompanies this Jaguar confirming it is a very well looked after example. A V5 registration document is supplied and the car comes with a complete toolkit. Recent expenditure includes significant work carried out on the brakes. The engine runs well and the fastidious vendor advises us this Jaguar drives well with no known faults. The automatic gearbox operates as it should and the power steering makes this an easy car to drive. Despite its appeal, the Jaguar 420 was only produced for a few years, from 1966 to 1968, with just over 10,000 units built. It was eventually replaced by the Jaguar XJ6, but the 420 remains a cherished classic among collectors today, admired for its blend of luxury, performance, and timeless design.
