The History of the Citroën 2CV: Everyone’s Friend (copyright CQS)

Few cars have as many nicknames as the 2CV: "The Duck," "Ugly Duckling," "Goat"—just to name a few. This beloved little car has even earned a spot in dictionaries as the deux chevaux. These affectionate names show the emotional connection people have with it. Nearly everyone knows someone who owned or drove one, and countless people have fond memories of the 2CV.

When the 2CV was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 7, 1948, it was initially mocked. Only a Swiss magazine foresaw its potential, predicting a bright future for the little Citroën. They were right: by 1950, the waiting list for a 2CV had grown to six years.

A Design Born of Market Research

While the 2CV's quirky looks might suggest it was whimsically designed, it was actually the result of meticulous market research. The goal was a cheap car that fit a farmer or worker’s budget, could carry a 50-liter barrel of wine, and traverse a field without breaking a basket of eggs. Additionally, the car needed to be tall enough for the driver to keep their hat on when driving to church.

    An Iconic Success

Despite its rocky start, the 2CV became a massive hit. It evolved from a utilitarian vehicle into a cultural icon. More than 4 million 2CVs were produced between 1948 and 1990, with final models made in Portugal using leftover parts. The 2CV's simple construction also led to adaptations like the Méhari, van variants, and kit cars such as the Burton and Lomax. Today, the 2CV remains beloved by fans, as evidenced by the thousands who gather for the biennial 2CV World Meeting.
