Description

Registration number: BE-26-MR

By the end of the 1930s, the 'Derby' Bentley, introduced at the beginning of that decade following the company's takeover by Rolls-Royce, had undergone several significant developments that were important for the brand. For instance, the engine capacity was increased to 4,257 cc. The new engine was shared with the Rolls-Royce 25/30hp, but the Bentley had some differences that made it significantly different. The Bentley featured, among other things, a sportier camshaft and twin SU carburetors. The result was that the new 4¼-liter Bentley offered more power, which was of course a good thing.
These innovations made the 'Derby' Bentley a perfect combination of power, reliability, and sportiness, setting a new standard for luxury and performance in the automotive industry.

At Gallery Aaldering, we have a beautiful 1938 Bentley Drophead Coupe in our collection. The vehicle has undergone an extensive restoration and overhaul by the renowned marque specialists Alpine Eagle, resulting in a great condition. This Bentley, originally Hooper’s London Olympia Motor Show car, was delivered to Archibald Fraser Esq in Glasgow after the show. In 1942, the car was transferred to Sir Oliver Edwin Simmonds MP in Ripley, who had an electric/hydraulic hood mechanism installed by Abbotts of Farnham.

The restoration history of this car is extensively documented, and we have included some photos of the documentation for you. Between 2001 and 2003, a full restoration was carried out by Alpine Eagle in Clanfield, including a complete engine overhaul in 2009 by RR & B Garages in Bromsgrove. The costs for these restorations were significant, and the detailed documentation consists of three thick books.

Throughout its lifetime, this Bentley has participated in numerous concourse, events, and rallies, including several trips to Pau, where the Bentley was well received by judges and the public alike. Various awards and trophies were earned by this magnificent vehicle.

Recently, Alpine Eagle performed an extensive service, putting the car in excellent condition. The great thing about a car of this caliber is that the driving experience of this Bentley is comparable to how it felt when it left the showroom in the late 1930s. The engine runs smoothly, and the car drives excellently, thanks in part to its great condition. For cold weather conditions, a heater is installed, and there is a 12-volt socket available for modern devices. In short, this superior car with desirable Hooper coachwork is in a condition that is hard to surpass.
