History of the Alfa Romeo Duetto

"The most beautiful under the sun" (quote from Alfa Romeo advertising in Germany). The Alfa Romeo Duetto is a true icon of Italian automotive engineering and one of the most stylish convertibles of the 1960s and 1970s. Officially known as the Alfa Romeo Spider, it was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966. Designed by Pininfarina, its flowing lines and low, flat front created a timeless and elegant appearance. Particularly striking is the so-called "Osso di Seppia" design (translated as "cuttlefish bone"), which distinguished the early models.

This lightweight Spider features the classic all-aluminum twin-cam four-cylinder engine, a sporty 5-speed gearbox, as well as disc brakes at the front and rear, making it well ahead of its time. The interior is highlighted by two beautiful Jaeger main instruments housed under a shared cowl behind the three-spoke steering wheel, complemented by three additional gauges in the center of the dashboard. However, the Duetto was produced in only around 6,325 units.

Life of the offered Alfa Romeo Duetto 1750 – SSC633

On May 27, 1969, this Alfa Romeo was presumably first delivered in the Netherlands. According to the available documents, only two previous owners could be identified in the Netherlands. From 2023 onwards, this original Alfa Romeo 1750 became part of a significant collection in Hamburg. The last owner is now reluctantly parting with this Spider and has entrusted Scuderia Sportiva Colonia with the sale.

This Spider is in exceptionally good condition for its age. A few years ago, it was repainted in the color Blu Olandese (AR 343) and received a new Sonnenland-quality soft top two years ago. The interior is immaculate, and the technical condition is excellent. In short, this Duetto has always been meticulously and proactively maintained.

This Alfa Spider is a purist’s dream—spirited, uncompromising, and offering outstanding performance. The 1750 version with 118 hp has no trouble moving its body, which weighs just under 1,000 kg. The engine is audible, the sound captivating, and with the top down, it is breezy and windy—beyond 120 km/h, even Adriano Celentano would struggle to compete vocally against the rushing wind. Visually, especially in this color combination, the Duetto remains a gallant charmer. Even today, true ladies still turn their heads to admire it—an elegant Italian heartbreaker.

Conclusion

This Duetto not only embodies the typical Italian "Dolce Vita," but it is also a beautifully designed, timeless convertible with incredible and nearly unmatched performance. In short, a stunning design icon—a true wolf in sheep’s clothing. The perfect car for Alfisti who appreciate a sporty and highly elegant first-series convertible. Spare parts are still available at reasonable prices. We, along with our new sister company Scuderia Sportiva Servizio (formerly Alfa Classic Center) in Dortmund, are happy to handle service and parts supply.
