Description

The history of the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Bertone

When the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce saw the light of day at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show, one thing was immediately clear: this was not just a car. No, it was a masterpiece that brought Italian art, technology and passion to four wheels. Designed by Bertone, the car embodied everything that makes Alfa Romeo so fascinating: timeless elegance, pure sportiness and that certain something - the ‘brio’, the fire that only the Italians can bring to their cars in such an unrivalled way.

One look at the long, flowing lines of the bodywork and the heart of every car enthusiast begins to beat faster. At the front, you are greeted by the classic Alfa triangular grille - sharp yet subtle - flanked by the iconic twin headlights that give the car its unmistakable Alfa face. The shape of the roof and the elegant side line literally merge together, as if the designers had created the car with a single, flowing brushstroke. Every detail exudes craftsmanship, as if art and technology had been combined to create a perfect symbiosis. The slightly inclined rear section conveys dynamism, even when the car is stationary, and perfectly rounds off the overall appearance of this ‘macchina sportiva’.

However, the true heart of the 1750 GT beats under the bonnet: a 1.8-litre in-line four-cylinder engine that brings untamed passion to the road with its 118 cavalli (horsepower). One turn of the ignition key and the engine comes to life with that typical Alfa sound - a sound that goes through your veins and gets your adrenalin pumping. This engine demands the road, wants to be moved, and the 5-speed manual gearbox invites you to feel the power of this classic on every journey. Every shift is precise, almost as if the car is communicating with you and whispering: ‘I want fun - more throttle!’.

The 1750 GT shows its true class in the bends. The independent front suspension and rigid rear axle provide just the right amount of control and comfort - sporty yet elegant, a perfect balance between precision and lightness. Especially in the tight bends, driving becomes a dance that you never want to forget.

History of the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Bertone - 1st series

This special example of the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Bertone from the coveted first series was registered for the first time on 19 March 1969. Almost three decades later, in 1997, this classic became the property of an art historian and collector who proudly drove the car on the Côte d'Azur - where the roads do the car justice. However, in 2015, he decided to treat the car to a concours restoration at the renowned Alfa Classic Center (ACC) in Dortmund - an undertaking that makes even the author of these lines gasp when he looks at the bills and investments involved.

In 2015, he then opted for a Nuts & Bolts Concours restoration carried out by the legendary Alfa Classic Center (ACC) in Dortmund. What followed can hardly be described in words and causes the author of these lines to gasp when looking at the associated invoices and investments.

Bodywork: Complete bodywork overhauled to concours standard. The client attached great importance to perfect edges, lines, gaps and the opening and closing of the doors and bonnets. The bodywork was stripped of paint by water jet and coated using the KTL process after the bodywork treatment.

Chassis: Front axle with adjustable upper wishbones (GTA), front and rear axle with Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs in ACC set-up, installation of a rear axle differential 10/43 locked, with reinforced half shafts (Montreal design). Rear axle suspension and guide with reinforced bushes. Front brakes: 4-piston calliper from ATE

Engine & gearbox: Rebuilt and modified cylinder head with larger valves, enlarged and modified port, installation of higher-compression pistons, lightened connecting rods, lightened crankshaft and flywheel, new 45 Weber carburettor, additional oil cooler, electric fan, focus on improved performance (140 hp) and early onset of high torque. Customised exhaust system with stainless steel manifold and larger pipe diameter for the rest of the system. Gearbox rebuild with renewal of all bearings and synchroniser rings.

Interior: Complete rebuild of the body, with modern soundproofing and insulation of the entire passenger compartment and boot, leather upholstery, new upholstery cores, new Alcantara headlining, carpet (black) in loop fabric. Carpet lining in the boot. Dashboard wood varnished 12 times.

Further on: All instruments were overhauled and refurbished, oil temperature gauge retrofitted in a matching look, set of wheels custom-made in BBS style in 15”

The restoration was finally completed in 2019. The total investment including the purchase of the base vehicle amounts to well over € 250,000. The condition of this Alfa Romeo is simply unique and the asking price is out of all proportion to the investments made.

Note: The entire collection of this Alfa enthusiast is in a comparable condition and will also be offered by us over time. This 1750 currently has deregistered French registration papers.

Conclusion

The Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Bertone remains one of the finest examples of Italian automotive engineering - a car that not only shines with its timeless aesthetics, but also with its pure, powerful driving dynamics. This coupé is more than just a classic - it is an expression of style, temperament and a time when driving was still an art form. Anyone who is lucky enough to own such a treasure today is not only holding a piece of automotive history in their hands, but is also living the dream of “la dolce vita” on the road.
